The UroLift® System is a revolutionary, minimally invasive procedure designed to treat benign prostatic hyperplasia (BPH), or an enlarged prostate – which is the most frequent prostate problem in men over the age of 50.
What Is an Enlarged Prostate
The prostate tends to get larger as men age. This enlargement often squeezes the urethra, which is the internal pathway tube that carries urine from the bladder to the outside; the urethra passes right through the prostate.
The squeezing can create a blockage of the urine flow. The symptoms of BPH can include difficulty starting urination, a reduced stream, increased need to urinate, and the inability to completely empty the bladder.
If left untreated, BPH can develop into urinary retention or incontinence, bladder stones, and damage to the bladder and kidney.
Traditional Treatments for BPH
Until recently, most men living with moderate BPH have taken medicines to reduce the symptoms of the condition. These medications can provide relief of the pain and discomfort, but they can also bring side effects – including fatigue, dizziness, and sexual dysfunction.
The major medications currently in use for BPH include:
· Alpha blockers – To relax muscles in the bladder and prostate in order to make urination easier
· 5-alpha-reductase inhibitors – To moderate certain hormones, thereby reducing the size of the enlarged prostate
There are other treatments available for an enlarged prostate, but they tend to be less effective for most men. These include radiofrequency ablation, microwave thermotherapy, or laser treatment to provide short-term relief of symptoms.
Surgery on the Prostate
Surgery is also an option in some cases of BPH. Surgeons usually insert a miniature scope through the urethra, and use a group of tiny surgical instruments to perform different surgeries.
Making small cuts in the prostate to remove large parts of the gland, or special implants to permanently compress the prostate, can help alleviate BPH symptoms quickly and for a long period of time. The risks and side effects can include sexual dysfunction.
How UroLift Works
Approved by the FDA, the UroLift System is a revolutionary, minimally invasive treatment for BPH designed to help men avoid taking medications and avoid major surgery. The treatment can be done with local anesthesia at your urologist’s office during a one-time visit, and it takes about an hour to complete.
The UroLift System uses up to six tiny permanent implants to lift and hold the enlarged prostate out of the way of the urethra. This system therefore removes the pressure placed on the urethra and restores the normal flow of urine.
Advantages of the UroLift System
UroLift offers many benefits as compared to medication and surgery, including:
· It is minimally invasive – no major surgical cuts are involved
· No removal of prostate tissue
· Minimal downtime – usually a couple of days
· Results are quick and long-lasting
· Does not cause unwanted sexual side effects
· Does not require continuous medications
· Men report good results and an improvement in the quality of their lives
